I need to buy my daughter a step-up flute. She's not likely to play after high school, so a pro flute is not in the cards. I prefer buying used. So far, I'm looking at a Yamaha 385 and an Armstrong 303B. Any suggestions?
I've played and serviced hundreds of student Gemeinhardts and Yamahas, and far fewer higher models of these brands. My recommendation would be thoroughly Yamaha.
As far as I'm concerned, Gemeinhardts are not very well designed acoustically, even though the metals used are more expensive than the flute's underlying mediocre acoustic design.
