Johann Johachim Quantz (Hanover 30 January 1697) was a German flutist, flute maker and Baroque music composer. He composed hundreds of flute sonatas and concertos, and wrote On Playing the Flute, a treatise on flute performance. His works were known and appreciated by Bach, Haydn and Mozart.
François Devienne (Joinville, 31 January 1759) was a French composer and professor for flute at the Paris Conservatory. He was active in Paris as a flautist, bassoonist and composer, and played bassoon at the Paris Opera. He wrote successful operas in the 1790s, including Les visitandines (1792) which brought him much success.
Emanuele Krakamp (Palermo, February 13, 1813) was an Italian flutist and composer. He gave concerts in Europe, Africa and America. Krakamp was the first Italian flutist to adopted the Boehm system flute.
Robert Neil Cavally (February 24, 1906 - April 25, 1994) was an American flutist who trained and inspired many noted flute performers and teachers, and edited many solos and etudes for use by teachers. He was an eloquent writer and woodworker.
Giulio Briccialdi (Terni, on March 1 or 2, 1818). He began studying flute with his father. At 14-year-old, Briccialdi moved to Rome to pursue a musical career and avoid family pressure to join the priesthood. His first appointment was to the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome at the age of 17. While in Rome he studied composition and, in 1835, began teaching flute at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia. He then moved to Naples, where he was the flute teacher for the royal family. He was considered one of the most talented flutist of his century.
