    Johann Christoph Denner (Leipzig, August 13, 1655) Fuerstenau relates that Denner was the first to make important improvements in the transverse flute. Besides his celebrity as a maker of all sorts of wood-wind instruments, Denner was famous as a flute player. In 1690, he invented the clarinet.

De Lorenzo started playing the flute at the age of 8 and went to Naples to attend the Music conservatory "San Pietro a Majella". Emigrated to USA, he became first flautist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by Gustav Mahler.

    Leonardo De Lorenzo (August 29, 1875 – July 29, 1962) was an Italian virtuoso flautist and music educator.

    From 1923 to 1935 he was professor for flute at the Eastman School of Music, where one of his students was Julius Baker, considered one of the greatest American flutist of his generation. After his retirement, De Lorenzo focused on composition and writing of theoretical publications. In 1951 he released the book My complete story of the flute, a result of intensive research by De Lorenzo which made him one of the most eminent flute pedagogues of the 20th century.
